The University of Victoria, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, August 5-10, 2008

The University of Victoria will host the 2008 ICOHTEC conference. The university and the City of Victoria have a wealth of resources to offer to both the historian of technology and the tourist. Well known for its scenic beauty and temperate climate, Victoria and Vancouver Island have a long history with a variety of industries and scientific research centres. Victoria’s scenic harbour was once one of the busiest ports on the west coast of Canada, and remains a major tourist entry point for ferry’s, cruise ships, and float planes. The neighbouring harbour of Esquimalt is the home of Canada’s Pacific Fleet, and a thriving ship repair industry. Mining, lumber and pulp and paper are other important industries on Vancouver Island. Victoria is home to many thriving high technology businesses. The technological traditions of the Northwest Coast Indians have been preserved, and will be on display during the conference.
